Housing and skilled trades needs brought local businesses and education together to create the Home Construction Cooperative, a home remodeling and building program that trains high school students in the construction trades. Kicked off by the donation of an old home from SSM Health Monroe, contributions of time and funds from local contractors, and an incredible collaboration with the School District of Monroe, 17 students renovated the home. Proceeds from the sale were then used to build a new home on a lot donated by the city of Monroe. The success and growth of the program continues with expansions to include other school districts and grant funds to support additional trades education in the county.
